Get swept up in the intoxicating rhythms and movements of Soukous – the electrifying music and dance style with roots in Congo! Over this 10-week course of 12 lessons, you’ll learn to embody the fast, rippling footwork and sensual body articulations that define Soukous dance.

More than just steps, you’ll explore how Soukous evolved from earlier Congolese rumba styles like le rok and la rayé, blending African folk traditions with Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz influences. Choreography will cover both shining solo moves and the partner call-and-response interplay central to Soukous.

Whether a complete novice or experienced dancer, you’ll cultivate an appreciation for how Soukous uplifted Congolese identity and self-expression through decades of social upheaval. Get ready to make the floor sizzle with this iconic Central African dance!

What is the Soukous dance style?

Soukous is a high-energy, rhythmically complex and sensual dance originating from the Congolese rumba folk traditions. It pairs fast, rippling footwork with undulating torso articulations.

Is Soukous similar to other partner dances?

While having partner work, Soukous has its own distinctive lead/follow dynamics inspired by the call-and-response of the music itself. Prior partner dance experience can help but isn’t required.

Do I need a partner to take this class?

No partner is required as the course covers both solo and partnered Soukous choreography and techniques. But bringing a friend can make it more fun!

What level of dance experience is needed?

All levels are welcome, from total beginners to experienced dancers. The choreography will have modifications to make it achievable yet challenging.

What kind of music accompanies Soukous dance?

You’ll dance to classic Soukous tracks featuring intricate polyrhythmic patterns played on traditional percussion like hand drums and hi-hats.
