Get ready to get funky with the dynamic moves of Azonto – the trendsetting dance craze that took Ghana and the world by storm! In this 10-week course over 12 lessons, you’ll learn to embody Azonto’s distinctive grounded and bouncy grooves.

More than just steps, you’ll explore Azonto’s roots in contemporary West African dances like Alkayida and Kpakpakpa, as well as its influences from hip-hop and Ghanaian highlife music. Build choreography fusing Azonto’s full-body undulations with intricate hand and torso movements.

No matter your skill level, you’ll gain an appreciation for how Azonto’s exaggerated moves and carefree attitude became an expression of Ghana’s vibrant youth culture. Be prepared to have fun bringing this style’s exhilarating energy to life!

What is Azonto dance?

Azonto is a popular contemporary dance style that originated in Ghana around 2010 and quickly became an international phenomenon. It combines grounded footwork with full-body undulations, hand movements and attitude.

Do I need dance experience for this course?

No prior dance experience is required! This course is open to beginners, though some movement fundamentals will help you pick it up faster.

What kind of music is used for Azonto?

The course will cover dancing to traditional Azonto songs – a mix of hip-hop, dancehall and highlife music with distinctive rhythms and call-and-response vocals.

Should I take this course with a friend/partner?

While the course focuses on individual Azonto expression, bringing a friend can make it even more fun! However, partners are not required.

What can I expect from class?

Each session will cover key Azonto moves, rhythms and choreography. You’ll learn about its cultural roots in Ghana through videos and discussion as well.
